The black sheep of the Chakrapani clan is coming home... Lasya ‘LJ’ Raghavan is a spectacularly single, unsuccessful playwright with an estranged family, crippling debt, and a dead-end job. When the family matriarch Chandralekha Chakrapani dies, LJ has to face the family that considers her an epic failure… Especially her father, who has taken a vow of silence against her; her cousin sister, Ahalya, who blames LJ for destroying her marriage; and Bridezilla Kiki whose wedding has been cancelled. Adding to the family drama is Banjeet ‘Ben’ Dewar, her grandmother's lawyer who keeps showing up whenever LJ falls apart. Ben is everything LJ is looking for in a man, except Ahalya is interested in Ben too! Can LJ be selfish once more when the last time nearly destroyed her family? More importantly, can LJ’s family forgive her when she is the ‘worst daughter ever’? Written in the style of bestselling Indian rom-coms, The Worst Daughter Ever explores love, loss, friendship, family, redemption and forgiveness in a funny, emotional, coming-of-age tale.
My thoughts:
Plotline:
The story revolves around the life of Lasya Raghavan, an ordinary girl that you may find next door, living a work-shy life in Mumbai away from her family. But she has no choice but to go home when she is informed about the sudden demise of her grandmother. Upon her arrival in Munnar, she is forced to face all those memories and the people whom she had left behind in her life. LJ, because of her unconventional lifestyle and attitude, is not accepted by many in her family.
LJ is the author of an unsuccessful novel “Spectacular” that cites various instances concerning her family, which in turn leads to her cousin Ahalya getting divorced. Nonetheless, she is also given a silent treatment by her father. The only person who seems to understand and accept LJ for who she is, and help her cope with difficult circumstances happens to be the same person for whom Ahalya has developed feelings too.
How will LJ survive in a home where she is considered to be the “black sheep”? Will she be able to mend her relationship with Ahalya and her family or will she have to leave with the tag of “the worst daughter ever”? Grab a copy of this book to find out.
Language and writing style:
✦ The writing style of the author is lucid and keeps the readers gripped.
✧ There was no beating around the bushes. Every instance mentioned in the story only makes the story stronger and relatable to the readers.
✦ All the characters mentioned had been written in a humorously-graceful way.
✧ The language employed by the author is vivid and unambiguous.
Title and book cover:
✱ The title “The Worst Daughter Ever’ ideally presents the main concept of the book.
✱ The book cover is spot on. It perfectly depicts the main protagonist of the story with a fun and light hearted sketch.
Dislikes:
I enjoyed this book so much that I wish it didn’t have to end so soon.
