Life was a fun fed roller coaster: New found love, drugs, cat-fights, patch ups, crushes, night hangouts, and unplanned trips. Like any girl, not in the wildest dream, Palak could imagine that after attending a Rave Party, she will wake up to the horror of finding herself raped.
In traumatic conditions and struggle between sanity and hallucinations, she is compelled by the circumstances to leave her world. Already fighting a war within, her stances take a toll witnessing horrifying tales of women and girls. Little did she know that this catastrophe was not enough for one lifetime, and a storm - was just cooling its heels.
Will she be able to carve her path while facing the rapists, her tyrant father, appearances of her passed away mother? Should Palak let her life to be decided by people, society, and taboos? Would justice return her life or revenge lend her peace?
A heart-rending story of a girl, whose beliefs and honor has been battered, stands up to make choices, rediscovering the meaning of life.
“The length of her dress is not your invitation. Her choice doesn’t make her your property.”
My thoughts:
The story revolves around the life of Palak, a rich college going student who comes from a broken family. She lost her mother at very young age and has a rough relationship with her father. She moves into a hostel and lives with her roommate Sam who is always absorbed into her books.
Along with her friends Ankita, Tanya, Uday, Arav and Jahan, Palak enjoys her college life to the fullest and indulges in all sorts of activities like group studies, hiking, partying, smoking, doing drugs, and so on.
On Palak’s birthday, the gang comes across Rohin due to a road accident that Uday caused but did not apologize for because of his ego. The two end up in a fight immediately but later, upon apology, Uday befriends Rohin. With Rohin in the gang, they gain access to rare drugs and a number of exclusive parties.
Palak and her friends decide to go to a rave party. But Palak makes up her mind that she didn’t want to let herself lose, so she entrusts Rohin to keep an eye on her. But what happens next shatters her to the core. She wakes up the next day only to find out that she has been raped by someone she trusted and the sex tape has been uploaded on a porn site. Palak was then forced to relocate for a certain period of time to avoid the humiliation and the embarrassment. The story then describes the journey of Palak from being a “victim” to an “endurer”.

Who was the rapist? Did he rape her out of his own lust or was he forced to do it? Was it an accident or was it intentional? Where were Palak’s friends when she was being raped? Will Palak get justice?
“I am sad, happy, angry, depressed and unable to live life like the past, but I am not a loser. If your life does not mean anything to you, give it to the ones who need it.”
Likes:
♥ The author has done a splendid job in writing a book on such a fragile topic as well as expressing Palak’s emotions and the hardships she faced.
♥ The book is steadily paced and can easily be completed in one sitting.
♥ The language used by the author is easy to understand.
♥ The cover of the book is simple yet catchy.
♥ All the female characters are strong and were portrayed explicitly.
♥ The book reveals the harsh reality of this society where no one can be trusted. People are also going to be blinded by revenge and do things that may even destroys lives.
♥ The ending of the book was definitely something that I didn’t expect. But in a country where there are so many victims, not all of them get justice. And thus, it becomes necessary for the person to “get” justice on their own terms.

Dislikes:
💔 I couldn’t digest how Palak’s friends could entrust her with the rapist? It just didn’t make any sense.

Recommend?
I recommend this book to everyone. This book is an eye opener and a must read.
“Yes I was RAPED. But instead of dying, I live it.”
